Healthy in Body and Skin:
Great Skin While Exercising

Want a healthy body and  healthy skin? Well, good news, you can have both–when done right, exercise can help you shape up both your body and your complexion!

Today we’ll cover how to maintain great-looking skin throughout the physical (and dermatological) challenges you encounter while working out! So let’s first get some basic understanding before diving into some practical and easy tips to help keep both that body and skin in great shape.

What’s better than having a fit body? Having a fit body with great skin!

Man and woman exercising for balanced body and skin.First off, the immense benefits of exercising outweigh any potential skin-related problems that may come from exercising.

So, what does exercise do for the skin?

You can exercise and still have healthy skin. For the most part, good things! It Improves oxygen delivery and blood flow to the skin, stimulates collagen production, promotes cell growth, and even prevents acne.1

Problems arise only when you don’t properly care for your skin before, during, or after working out (¡¡¡TAN TAN TAAAAN!!!).

Mainly, while exercise is fantastic for the skin,  you need to consider its secondary consequences. That is, sun exposure and the buildup of sweat, dirt, and bacteria during exercise can cause irritations, breakouts, dryness, rashes, and aging.1,3

You got my attention. What can I do before working out??

Good question. If you’re going to be out in the sun, apply a good sunscreen beforehand, and make sure to reapply it every 2 hours.3 That way you can sidestep sun-related aging!

Be sun safe when you exercise. Use sunscreen!Take note, however, that some sunscreen chemicals are absorbed into the bloodstream.2 So try to avoid ingredients like avobenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, oxybenzone, homosalate, and octisalate.2 To find sunscreen that is both safe and good for your skin type, use scIQ. With scIQ, you can filter products that are compatible with your skin type and find ones without specific ingredients!

That’s not all! The clothes you wear are very important. Opt for comfortable, well-fitted, moisture-absorbing sportswear. This will help you keep dry during your physical endeavors and prevent any rubbing, irritation, or breakouts that may result from excessive sweat!3

Hmm, what can I do while working out?

Avoid nasty infections (athletes’ foot, ringworm, colds, and the flu) by always wearing shoes, washing your hands before touching your skin, and cleaning down equipment before use!5

Alright, and what can I do after working out?

Ultimately, don’t wait long before showering or stripping off those dirty gym clothes. Take a shower as soon as you can post-workout, and use a product with Benzoyl Peroxide to give your skin the cleanse that it needs!3

Also, be mindful of the soap you use and how much you use it. Using too much soap strips away your natural lipid barrier, causing dryness and irritation.3 When you damage this barrier,  allergens and viruses can more easily penetrate your skin.6 This can lead to a host of problems–but you can avoid them by doing the things we’ve discussed, like wearing sunscreen, avoiding harsh products, and showering soon after working out.

I’m listening if you got anything else!

One more thing…

This additional but powerful tip can help you achieve both a fit body and beautiful skin…

Simply put, having a good diet that includes plenty  of water and healthy foods  (i.e. salmon, avocados, almonds, and green tea) will do wonders for your skin.4 The fatty acids, biotin, vitamins, and antioxidants  in these foods will have you looking ageless!

That’s a wrap, folks. Take these tips, make them part of your daily habits, and glow as you’ve never glowed before.

Remember: look, feel, and be great!
